2003 Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Award Recipient

Robert E. Shepherd Jr., Esquire

Robert E. Shepherd Jr., professor emeritus of law at the University of Richmond School of Law, received the 2003 Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Award from the Virginia State Bar’s Criminal Law Section at the 33rd annual Criminal Law Seminar.

The award, established in 1992 in honor of Carrico, who retired as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia in January of this year, recognizes a singular and unique contribution to the improvement of the criminal justice system in Virginia.

Shepherd is an acknowledged expert on juvenile justice and the juvenile court system. He is widely known for his work as an advocate for children and has received several prestigious awards, including the President's Award of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Child Advocacy Award of the National Association of Counsel for Children, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the VSB’s Family Law Section.

Shepherd is former chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee of the American Bar Association, and has been involved with the Action Alliance for Virginia's Children and Youth and the Board of Fellows of the National Center for Juvenile Justice.
