About the Cover

The 34-ton propeller from the SS United States, a record-setting transatlantic passenger liner built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in the late 1940s, is on display at the entrance of the Mariners’ Museum Park and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News, Virginia. The company was founded in 1886 and has built more than 800 vessels including tugboats, steamships, dreadnoughts, aircraft carriers, passenger liners, tankers, and cargo ships.
