Virginia State Bar Newsletter December 2019

The following went out as part of a monthly news summary email to all Virginia lawyers on December 2. To make sure you are receiving the VSB emails, update your contact information with the Virginia State Bar and add to your email account’s address book.

On November 1, the Supreme Court of Virginia amended two rules and added one, all effective January 1, 2020. They concern licensing rules for Virginia Corporate Counsel & Corporate Counsel Registrants, Rule 2:615 pertaining to exclusion of witnesses, and Rule 7B:12 regarding separate notices of appeal by other parties.

A Supreme Court of Virginia advisory committee seeks comments on proposed amendments to the Rules of Court regarding deposition notices and the alternative pretrial order for eminent domain cases. Comments due Dec 12.

Serve your Bar. Now is the time to consider how you can be a leader in your Bar in 2020.

All CLE hours for 2019, whether used for compliance OR carryover, need to be reported no later than 4:45 pm EST December 15, 2019. The online reporting system will shut down at that time for end of year processing. If your online CLE record is correct and you have no additions or corrections to make, no other action is required. Check your record here.

Pro Bono / Access to Justice

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday. Consider making a Rule 6.1 pro bono financial contribution to a Qualified Legal Service Provider and help expand access to legal services for those in need this holiday. Contact Cris Gantz at for more ideas about ways to give back in the spirit of the season.

The Virginia Lawyer Referral Service often provides low bono services to low- and modest-means Virginians and provides Virginia lawyers with prescreened referrals. The VLRS needs lawyers in a number of practice areas including car repair disputes, auto contracts, repairs & recalls, tenant & commercial leasing, DMV complaint/collections, labor law, consumer law, and termination law. If you are new to the service, your next year of referrals is FREE, so sign up today, or contact Toni Dunson at for more information.

The Bar’s Access to Justice brochure – a resource guide for low- and modest-income Virginians – is now in Spanish
Thank you to the Diversity Conference for partnering in the project, and to the lawyers who assisted with translation, including Mary Virginia Overholser (Richmond); Luis A. Perez (Falls Church); Christine Lockhart Poarch (Salem); K. Vanessa Rodriguez (Fairfax); and Jennifer Grace Smyrnos (Roanoke).
