The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics seeks public comment on a proposed additional Comment to Rule 1.1, Competence. Comments deadline is February 16, 2018.

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking public comment on proposed advisory Legal Ethics Opinion 1889 – Scope of representation – Duty of court-appointed lawyer to appeal termination of parental rights order.

Comments are sought on a proposed Supreme Court of Virginia rule amendment regarding limited scope representation. The deadline is March 1, 2018. 

Effective March 1, 2018, the Supreme Court of Virginia approved changes to the rules governing emeritus status in the Virginia State Bar.

And in January the Court announced a free, online subscription service for opinions, orders, dockets, rule changes, events, and more.

US Senators Mark R. Warner and Timothy M. Kaine are accepting applications from candidates interested in pursuing a nomination to fill the upcoming federal judicial vacancy in the US District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline calls for nominations for district committee vacancies to be filled by Council in June. 

President-elect Leonard Heath seeks members for Virginia State Bar committees with terms commencing July 1, 2018.

Volunteers are needed to serve on VSB boards and committees beginning July 1, 2018. 

Ready to serve? The VSB also seeks nominations for a vacant MCLE board seat.

The Honorable Martin F. Clark, Jr., author of four legal thrillers, has won the Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Award. Judge Clark was nominated by the Patrick County Bar and seconded by Alan Black, PLC, Schneider & Williams, P.C., the Patrick County Commonwealth's Attorney, and the Office of the Public Defender.

Applications for the Oliver Hill/Samuel Tucker Pre-Law Institute, a joint initiative of the VSB's Diversity Conference and Young Lawyers Conference, are due April 1, 2018. Help spread the word in this effort to promote diversity in law.

The 48th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, is scheduled for February 2 in Charlottesville and February 9 in Williamsburg.

Mark your calendar for the March 9, 2018, Bar Leaders Institute at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Registration will open on January 10, 2018.
