Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine are accepting applications for the position of judge in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Effective immediately, the Supreme Court of Virginia has approved Legal Ethics Opinion 1887: Duties when a lawyer over whom no one has supervisory authority is impaired.

Supreme Court of Virginia Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons has recommended and is seeking comments on the Conference to the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being’s report, The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change.

Attorneys who would like to assist low-income victims of Hurricane Harvey with their legal issues via the ABA’s Free Legal Answers program may do so by following the instructions found here.

The Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board is seeking comment on proposed changes to Opinion 16 regarding the standards for MCLE courses presented remotely. Comment deadline is September 15, 2017.

Anthem, Aetna, and United Healthcare have announced that they will stop selling individual policies in virtually all Virginia localities effective January 1, 2018. Five insurers remain in Virginia’s marketplace:  Optima, Kaiser, Piedmont, Cigna, and CareFirst. VSB members with questions concerning coverage may contact their brokers or the Virginia State Bar Members’ Insurance Center (877-214-5239) about establishing a group health insurance plan (if they have a full-time non-spousal employee).

At its meeting on May 5, 2017, the Virginia State Bar Clients’ Protection Fund Board awarded $66,392.99 in reimbursement to former clients of four Virginia attorneys. 

The Virginia State Bar Access to Justice Committee and the Old Dominion Bar Association are sponsoring a seminar with three MCLE hours pending entitled Bridging the Justice Gap through Pro Bono on September 12, 2017, in Richmond.

Registration is open for the 29th Annual Intellectual Property Seminar 2017, October 13 and 14, at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel.

Membership dues must be received by October 10 to avoid suspension. Members may pay at the member’s portal or by mail.

Now is the time to check your online record and plan your MCLE compliance. Apply now for any non-approved course that you have attended. The MCLE compliance deadline is October 31.
