Virginia State Bar E-News, November 2016

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking comments on proposed amendments to Rules 7.1 - 7.5 of the Rules of Professional Conduct that govern lawyer advertising. The comment deadline is November 4.

At its meeting on October 7, 2016, in Roanoke, the Virginia State Bar Council approved and sent to the Supreme Court of Virginia for its consideration:

  • Amendments to Paragraph 13-24 regarding reciprocal discipline.
  • Amendments to Part 6, Section IV, Paragraph 13.1 regarding suspension for failure to complete the Professionalism Course.
  • Legal Ethics Opinion 1886, which concerns the duty of partners and supervisory lawyers in a law firm when another lawyer in the firm suffers from significant impairment.

Sign up for The website is part of an ABA multi-state initiative to provide online pro bono civil legal assistance to Virginia residents with income levels of 250 percent of the poverty guidelines or less (a household income of just over $29,000 annually for a single adult).

Experienced judges and lawyers will provide practice tips at the First Day in Practice seminar. The December 6 seminar is sponsored by the VSB General Practice Section and the Young Lawyers Conference. Six CLE credits, two ethics (pending). Space is limited.

Register for Serious Illness, the Law, and Pro Bono Service, Part 3: Relief from Creditors webinar, sponsored by LINC, on November 17, 2016.

The MCLE Form 1 End of Year Report will be mailed soon. The reporting deadline is 4:45 p.m. December 15.

The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline calls for nominations for district committee vacancies to be filled by Council in June.

The VSB is seeking nominations for the following awards:

·      Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Award

·      William R. Rakes Leadership in Education Award

·      Betty A. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award

·      Family Law Service Award

President-elect Causey seeks members for Virginia State Bar committees with terms commencing July 1, 2017.

The annual Law in Society essay contest for high school students is accepting entries.
