The Virginia State Bar Special Committee on Access to Legal Services is seeking comments on proposed changes to the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia Part 6, § IV, ¶ 3(e), Organization and Government: modifying the status of Emeritus Members who will be allowed to provide pro bono legal services.
The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics will send to Council for its review and approval proposed Legal Ethics Opinion 1887.
Effective July 1, 2017, the Supreme Court of Virginia approved amended Rules 7.1 through 7.5, which govern lawyer advertising.
The Court also has amended the following rules effective July 1.
- Rule 5:13(c). Record on Appeal: Preparation and Transmission.
- Rule 5:17(a)(1). Petition for Appeal.
- Rule 5:21(a)(6). Special Rules Applicable to Certain Appeals of Right.
The Supreme Court of Virginia has asked the VSB to provide an updated list of attorneys willing to serve on Medical Malpractice Review Panels. Attorneys who are interested in serving should submit a letter of interest and a resume to Karen A. Gould, Executive Director, Virginia State Bar, at gould@vsb.org on or before June 15.
Online pre-registration for the 79th Annual Meeting will be accepted until June 12, or register on-site in Virginia Beach. Doris Henderson Causey will be sworn in as the 79th VSB president on Friday, June 16. The registration deadline for the Fore Diversity Golf Tournament is June 9.
Check your mail – Dues statements will be mailed June 16. Annual dues must be received at the Virginia State Bar by July 31, or delinquency fees will be assessed. Active members must pay the Clients' Protection Fund assessment and provide a completed and signed Mandatory Certification Regarding Professional Liability Insurance, also by July 31. Separate fines will be assessed for unpaid dues, unpaid CPF fees, and incomplete liability insurance certifications. Beginning June 19, you may renew your membership, certify your liability insurance coverage, join VSB sections, and pay your dues online by going to Member Login on the VSB home page. Corporate counsel registrants may also use this feature.

VSB awards:
- James E. Moliterno has been named the 2017 recipient of the William R. Rakes Leadership in Education Award by the VSB’s Section on the Education of Lawyers in Virginia.
- The late James P. “Penny” Baber, a lifelong general practitioner in Cumberland County, has been named the recipient of the Tradition of Excellence Award by the General Practice Section.
- Melissa Little and Crystal Shin are the co-recipients of the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference 2017 R. Edwin Burnette Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year Award.
- Joseph A. Condo is the recipient of the Diversity Conference’s Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. Achievement Award.
- University of Virginia law student Amber A. Strickland will receive the Oliver White Hill Law Student Pro Bono Award from the Access to Legal Services Committee.
- The Access to Legal Services Committee has also named Angela A. Ciolfi, litigation director at the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, as the recipient of the Virginia Legal Aid Award.
- Andrew J. Reinhardt, partner in Reinhardt, Harper, Davis PLC, has been named the recipient of the first Specialty Bar Leader of the Year Award by the Conference of Local Bar Associations.
- The CLBA has named the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association the recipient of the Bar Association of the Year Award.
- The CLBA has also named Heather Scott Miller, an associate in Sevila, Saunders, Huddleston & White in Leesburg, recipient of the Local Bar Leader of the Year Award.
