Virginia Tech Seeks Estate Planning Attorneys for Farm/Forest Legacy Planning

Generation NEXT, a partnership between Virginia Tech, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the Virginia Department of Forestry, is working to support Virginia farm and forestland owners in legacy planning.

Adam K. Downing, Senior Extension Agent for Forestry at Virginia Tech says, “We define “Legacy Planning” as the ongoing effort to pass land to the next generation, intact. This requires, among other things, good estate planning.”

According to Jennifer Friedel, Esq., Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Agriculture and Applied Economics, “Landowners have often asked us for a list of legal professionals.  Namely, those with experience and understanding of rural land and the legal tools available to help landowners pass the land legacy on to their next generation or even to a new generation.”

The generation NEXT program is currently developing a list of lawyers to make available to farm and forestland owners looking for a well-suited estate planning attorney.

Interested attorneys should complete this survey or share with colleagues who may be interested.

The deadline to complete the survey is April 30, 2022.

Additionally, please consider participating in a Landowner Estate Planning CLE opportunity tentatively slated for June 22, 2022.  If you are interested in this, please e-mail Karen Snape ksnape@vt.edu to be added to a notification list.
