Supreme Court of Virginia Amends Rules to Clarify Usage of “Shall”

On Friday, November 13, 2020, the Supreme Court of Virginia amended Part II of the Rules of Court, the Virginia Rules of Evidence, to clarify the use of the word “shall” so as to “…implement the mandatory meaning established by the Legislature, and preserve the statutory references in the title of each rule that is derived in whole or in part from the Code of Virginia.”

The amendments become effective July 1, 2021.
