Virginia State Bar Newsletter October 2019

The Hon. Teresa M. Chafin has been invested to the Supreme Court of Virginia, replacing retiring Justice Elizabeth A. McClanahan. Justice Chafin, a native of Lebanon, was elected by the General Assembly to a 12-year term that began in September.

Comments are sought on proposed revisions to the Clients’ Protection Fund rules. Comments due Oct 11.

A SCOVA advisory committee seeks comments on proposed amendments to the Rules of Court regarding deposition notices and the alternative pretrial order for eminent domain cases. Comments due Dec 12.


Recent disciplinary actions:

  • Marc Ericson Darnell, license suspended, effective September 18, 2019.
  • Paul Granville Watson IV, license suspended, effective September 27, 2019
  • Glenn Cameron Alexander, public reprimand, effective August 20, 2019.


MCLE HOURS – By midnight, eastern time, October 31, 2019, active lawyers must have completed 12 hours of CLE, of which 2 hours must be in ethics and 4 hours live interactive. Click here to check your record. Apply for any non-approved course you have attended using the Attorney Individual Application. Please be advised our fax machine was lost in the recent flooding.
