Call for Nominations for Legal Aid and Law Student Pro Bono Awards

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Access to Legal Services is seeking nominations for two longstanding awards that recognize a legal aid lawyer and a law student for exemplary pro bono service. Nominations are due by April 1, 2022.

Since 1992, an outstanding legal aid attorney has received the Virginia Legal Aid Award. The award recognizes a lawyer exemplifying:

  • Innovation and creativity in advocacy;
  • Experience and excellence in service;
  • Impact beyond his or her own program’s service area.

The nominee must be a member of the Virginia State Bar and an employee of a legal aid society licensed by the VSB to operate in Virginia.

The Oliver White Hill Law Student Pro Bono Award was inaugurated by the Bar in 2002, and honors extraordinary law student achievement in pro bono and access to justice work.

Presentation of the award is reserved for extraordinary achievements of outstanding students. The Access Committee will annually review nominations to determine if there should be a designee.

The awards will be presented at the Legal Aid luncheon at the VSB Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach on June 17, 2022.

The deadline for nominations is 5 pm, Friday, April 1, 2022. Please submit all nominations to Access to Legal Services Committee, c/o Crista Gantz, Virginia State Bar, 1111 East Main Street, Suite 700, Richmond, Virginia 23219-0026. Direct questions to Crista at (804) 775-0522, or e-mail cgantz@vsb.org.
