Check your mail – Dues statements will be mailed Thursday, June 18. The annual dues must be received at the Virginia State Bar by Friday, July 31, or delinquency fees will be assessed. All active members must pay the Clients' Protection Fund assessment and provide a completed and signed Mandatory Certification Regarding Professional Liability Insurance, also by Friday, July 31. Separate fines will be assessed for unpaid dues, unpaid CPF fees, and incomplete liability insurance certifications. Beginning Friday, June 19, you may renew your membership, certify your liability insurance coverage, join VSB sections, and pay your dues online by going to Member Login on the VSB home page.  Corporate Counsel Registrants may also use this feature.

The Supreme Court of Virginia is considering modifying Rule 5:21(a) concerning appeals of right from the State Corporation Commission and is requesting comments on the proposed changes. Comments on the proposed Rules must be received by Monday, June 15, 2015.

The Supreme Court of Virginia has released for public comment The Report of the Special Committee on Criminal Discovery Rules to the Chief Justice and Justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia. Comments on the proposed rules must be received by Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking public comment on proposed advisory Legal Ethics Opinion 1882, “Concurrent conflict between criminal clients when one expresses the desire to testify against the other.”

The Ethics Committee also is seeking public comment on proposed advisory Legal Ethics Opinion 1883, “Ethical obligations of a lawyer for a ‘no-asset’ Chapter 7 bankruptcy petitioner in handling fixed fees advanced by the client.”

The Ethics Committee approved proposed changes to Rule 5.5 Comment [1a] and Rule 8.3(e) of the Rules of Professional Conduct on May 21, 2015. The changes are pending Council’s consideration at its upcoming meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2015.

Online pre-registration for the 77th Annual Meeting will be accepted until 5 p.m. Monday, June 15, or register on-site in Virginia Beach. Edward L. Weiner of Fairfax will be sworn in as the 77th VSB president on Friday, June 19.

Registration is open for the June 11 “Appellate Advocacy in Virginia” seminar in Blacksburg featuring Supreme Court of Virginia Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons and Chief Judge Glen A. Huff of the Virginia Court of Appeals.

President Kevin E. Martingayle has released the Study Group Report on Online Elections.

Council member Thomas A. Edmonds has notified the executive director that he intends to propose the following amendment to the Bylaws of the Virginia State Bar and Council at the June 18, 2015, VSB Council Meeting: In the bylaws of the Virginia State Bar, Article III Election of President-Elect, Sec. 4 (b), delete the language “. . . or made available by electronic means . . . .”
