The Supreme Court of Virginia has amended the following rules:
Effective April 1, 2017:
- Rule 5:20. Petition for Rehearing After Refusal of Petition for Appeal, Refusal of Assignments of Cross-Error, or Disposition of an Original Jurisdiction Petition.
- Rule 5:37. Petition for Rehearing After Consideration by the Full Court.
- Rule 5A:15A. Denial of Petition for Appeal; Petition for Rehearing Filed by Electronic Means.
- Rule 5A:33. Rehearing--On Motion of a Party After Final Disposition of a Case.
- Rule 5A:34. Rehearing En Banc After Final Disposition of a Case.
Effective May 1, 2017:
- Parts 5 and 5A Forms.
- Rule 5A:5(B)(2). Petition for a Writ of Actual Innocence; Form and Contents of Petition.
Effective July 1, 2017:
- Rule 5:13(c). Record on Appeal: Preparation and Transmission.
- Rule 5:17(a)(1). Petition for Appeal.
- Rule 5:21(a)(6). Special Rules Applicable to Certain Appeals of Right.
The Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking comment on two proposed Legal Ethics Opinions:
- LEO 1887: Duties when a lawyer over whom no one has supervisory authority is impaired.
- LEO 1885: Ethical considerations regarding a lawyer’s participation in an online attorney-client matching service.
Electronic voting for seats on the Council will begin April 10. Candidates are on the ballot in circuits: 1, 7, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19.
In addition, Circuit 10 will hold a meeting to elect a representative to Council on April 14, 2017, at 3:00 p.m., at the Charlotte Circuit Court, located at 145 David Bruce Highway, Charlotte Courthouse, VA 23923.
Online registration is open for the 79th Annual Meeting, June 15-18, 2017, in Virginia Beach.
Registration is open for the VSB TECHSHOW at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on April 24.
The 47th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, has video replays scheduled for April 26 in several locations.
Registration is also open for the Indigent Criminal Defense Seminar webcasts in Weyers Cave and Wytheville on May 3.
The VSB is seeking nominations for the following awards:
- The Diversity Conference Clarence M. Dunnaville Jr. Achievement Award. The nomination deadline is April 7.
- The Conference of Local Bar Associations Awards of Merit, Local Bar Leader of the Year Award, Specialty Bar Leader of the Year, and Bar Association of the Year Award. The nomination deadline is April 28.

VSB awards:
- James E. Moliterno has been named the 2017 recipient of the William R. Rakes Leadership in Education Award by the VSB’s Section on the Education of Lawyers in Virginia.
- Philip J. Hirschkop has been named the 2017 recipient of the Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Award by the VSB’s Criminal Law Section.
- Joseph A. Condo has been named the 2017 recipient of the Betty A. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award by the VSB’s Family Law Section.
- Cheshire I’A. Eveleigh has been named the 2017 recipient of the Family Law Service Award by the VSB’s Family Law Section.
