Highlights of the June 16 VSB Council Meeting

At its meeting on June 16, 2022, in Virginia Beach, the Virginia State Bar Council heard the following significant reports and took the following actions.

Nominating Committee Report

Council unanimously approved the slate of candidates in the Nominating Committee’s report to fill vacancies for the 2022–2023 term on the Executive Committee, MCLE Board, Clients’ Protection Fund Board, Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee, Council Members at Large, American Bar Association House of Delegates, and Disciplinary District Committees. The candidates for the MCLE Board and Council Members at Large will be presented to the Supreme Court of Virginia for appointment.

Amendments to Clients’ Protection Fund Rules

Council unanimously approved proposed amendments to rules governing administration of the Clients’ Protection Fund (CPF). The amendments give the CPF Board more flexibility to amend administrative and/or procedural rules and to clarify the oversight authority of Bar Council over the Clients’ Protection Fund and the CPF Board. 

Proposed Legal Ethics Opinion 1897

The Council approved, with 67 yea votes and 4 nay votes, proposed advisory

LEO 1897, Replying all to an email when the opposing party is copied. The proposed opinion will be presented to the Supreme Court of Virginia for approval.

Proposed Legal Ethics Opinion 1898

The Council approved, with 41 yea votes and 9 nay votes, proposed advisory LEO 1898, Cryptocurrency. The proposed opinion will be presented to the Supreme Court of Virginia for approval.

2022–23 VSB President Installation

The 2022 Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting took place in-person June 15–17, and the 2022–23 VSB president was inducted. Stephanie E. Grana was sworn into office and will take over the presidency of the Bar on July 1, 2022. She is the seventh woman and the first Latina to be president of the VSB in its 84-year history. Chidi I. James will be president-elect for 2022–23, and will take over the presidency of the Bar on July 1, 2023. He is the first African American man to be president-elect of the Virginia State Bar.

Executive Director Search Task Force

The task force reported to Bar Council that it has opened a job advertisement to solicit applications to replace VSB Executive Director Karen A. Gould, who is retiring. Deputy Executive Director Cameron M. Rountree will serve as interim executive director effective July 25.
