Compliance and COVID: Annual Renewal/MCLE Extended and Paperless

Virginia lawyers’ annual renewal statements for the 2020-21 year were mailed on June 24. Lawyers are now able to renew their licenses and pay annual dues completely online in the lawyer portal.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the annual dues deadline has been extended from July 31 until September 30, 2020.

Please note: VSB offices are closed to the public. If you intend to mail or deliver renewals/payments to the Virginia State Bar, deliveries are only accepted from the following services: USPS, UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, and Richmond Express. Please use a trackable express delivery method if sending close to the September 30 deadline. All renewal requirements must be received by 4:45 p.m. September 30, 2020.

What’s new?

  1. EmailEffective June 30, members must submit and maintain an email address of record which will be confirmed during the renewal process.
  2. Voluntary Pro Bono reporting: This year both active and associate members are requested to voluntarily supply information regarding pro bono service and financial contributions. Learn more.

Please contact the Membership Department at or (804) 775-0530 if you have questions about your dues statement.

Each year Active attorneys must complete 12.0 CLE hours, 2.0 of which are in ethics and 4.0 which are live interactive programs. The live interactive requirement can be met by attending live in person, completing a live webcast, or completing a live teleconference. Since the live interactive requirement can be met without leaving home and/or violating any Stay-at-Home orders there are no plans at this time to change the annual CLE requirement.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the completion deadline for the 2020 MCLE requirement has been extended from October 31 to midnight EST December 31, 2020. The CLE hours must be reported no later than 4:45 p.m. EST February 15, 2021.
