All Lawyers Asked to Check their MCLE Compliance

In April 2020, to ease active attorney’s professional responsibilities during the COVID-19 public health emergency, the Supreme Court of Virginia extended the completion deadline for active lawyers to complete their 2020 MCLE requirement from October 31 to December 31.

As we approach the first reporting deadline, please take time to review the Reporting Deadline FAQs on our website.

Due to our system’s configurations, we had to send out the 2020 MCLE Form 1 End of Year Reports in two mailings. We apologize for any confusion this may cause.

The first 2020 MCLE End of Year Report mailed to you included CLE courses completed between November 1, 2019, and October 31, 2020.

The second mailed a week later, contains CLE hours taken between November 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020. Both reports only include CLE hours reported by December 31, 2020.

To determine how many CLE hours you have, simply add the hours on both pages. (Note: Do not add in the 2019 carryover hours at the top twice.) As an alternative, we encourage you to log into your account at the Virginia State Bar website to view the most accurate and up to date version of your CLE record.

You may also log into your account at the Virginia State Bar website to add additional CLE hours to your record. If you elect to report by mail, please follow the directions on the back of your Form 1.

All hours, whether used for compliance or carryover, need to be reported no later than 4:45 pm EST on February 15, 2021. The online reporting system will remain open until 11:59 pm on February 16, 2021.

Due to emergency closings, staffing shortages, and alternative processing measures related to the COVID-19 public health emergency, we are currently experiencing course review backlogs and are working diligently to resolve this issue.

Because the delay in receiving your Form 1 End of Year Report(s) and the backlog of courses pending review may result in some attorneys not meeting the February 15 reporting deadline, we have implemented a reporting grace period and will not assess the Late Filing Fee until March 15, 2021. All CLE hours for the 2020 CLE year reported by March 15 will be considered timely. However, you are encouraged to report by February 15 if you are able.

To summarize:
  • The MCLE End of Year Report(s) have been mailed to all active attorneys. The reports will include hours reported by December 31.
  • Log into the VSB Portal to review the most up-to-date version of your record.
  • All hours for the 2020 CLE year reported by March 15 will be considered timely. The Late Filing Fee will be assessed after this date. Report by February 15 if possible.
  • CLE hours for 2020 can be reported online until 11:59 pm February 16. Follow instructions on the Form 1 for reporting courses by mail after this date. Refer to the blank Form 1 on our website if you have not received the form(s) mailed to you.
Your timely compliance is important to us. If you have any questions, contact our office at (804) 775-0577 or MCLE@vsb.org
