Be Aware of Phishing Scam

As most VSB members probably know by now, a ransomware phishing scam, called WannaCry, has caused a major disruption to computer systems worldwide.

The American Bar Association has issued a cyber alert about the cyberattack, as has the FBI.

The VSB encourages all members and their employees to pay particularly close attention to any unexpected e-mails that prompt you to open an attachment or click on a button. It is these types of phishing e-mails that are the source of the WannaCry ransomware.

Microsoft has issued Windows updates, which should help protect against the attack. Although lawyers should not be using unsupported software such the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft has taken the extraordinary step of releasing a patch for XP, knowing that it remains in wide use, in order to defeat this ransomware. Also recommended are a good, properly configured firewall and anti-malware software, which should defend against viruses, Trojans, worms, phishing e-mails, spyware, etc.
