Call for Nominations: Pro Bono Awards for Individuals and Organizations

The Standing Committee on Access to Legal Services seeks nominees for 2019 awards that honor contributions to pro bono work.

The Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award honors attorneys and attorney groups that have made outstanding pro bono contributions and is named after the late associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and Virginia lawyer who, prior to serving on the bench, helped create a national network of legal aid programs.

The Frankie Muse Freeman Organizational Pro Bono Award honors organizations that have made outstanding contributions in the area of pro bono legal services for the poor, and bears the name of the legendary Virginia civil rights attorney who was the first woman to be appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights

View the linked award pages for more of the criteria for nominations. The Access to Legal Services Committee reviews all nominations and decides upon the recipient. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, August 16, 2019, before 5:00 pm.

The award will be presented at a ceremony during the VSB’s Pro Bono Conference on Wednesday, October 16, at the Hotel Madison in Harrisonburg – part of the 39th Annual Statewide Legal Aid Conference hosted by the Virginia Poverty Law Center.
