Virginia’s Free Legal Answers Reaches Fourth Birthday, Continues to Shine Nationally

Virginia Free Legal Answers ( will turn four on August 22, 2020, and continues to be one of the easiest and most innovative ways for lawyers to complete pro bono hours while assisting low-income and modest-means Virginians.

Virginia Free Legal Answers (VA FLA) is part of a fifty-state interactive website initiated by the American Bar Association to provide online legal assistance to low-income individuals while bringing us closer to the value of equal justice under law.

So far, volunteer attorneys in the Commonwealth have helped more than 2,900 Virginians-in-need by answering 3,222 of 3,480 questions asked, representing a 93 percent attorney response rate. The Virginia lawyer engagement level has consistently ranked Virginia with one of the highest attorney-response rates in the country.

Lawyers may assist 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at their convenience, answering questions of their choosing based on applicable Virginia and/or federal law. No in-person interaction occurs, making VA FLA a useful pro bono tool during the COVID pandemic.

Volunteer lawyers may subscribe to legal categories of their interest and receive email notifications when a legal question is posted. Lawyers remain anonymous, choose when to log in and engage and what questions to answer, and are free of long-term commitments because the client agrees up front to a limited-scope engagement specifically excluding representation in court.

The Virginia State Bar recognizes volunteer attorneys who answer more than 15 questions on the site by naming them “Pro Bono Heroes” and awarding them with an enamel lapel pin and a certificate of achievement.
