Requirements for New Virginia Lawyers

Information for New Virginia Lawyers

All attorneys licensed by the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners are required to register with the Virginia State Bar. The complete Virginia State Bar membership registration packet is available here.

Newly admitted active lawyers are exempt from the MCLE requirement for the year in which they are licensed. (The MCLE year runs from November 1 to October 31.) Your first compliance deadline will be October 31, 2022. Read more MCLE FAQs for newly licensed attorneys.

Lawyers registering as active must also take the mandatory Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course—required within twenty-four months* of registering with the bar. For additional information on the professionalism, course click here. At this time, all Professionalism Course attendees are required to wear masks during the course.  Lunch seating will offer additional spacing so that masks can be removed while eating.

*Members registered with the VSB between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2021 who were unable to attend a course to due COVID-19 cancellations, have thirty-six months from their registration date to complete a course.
