Requirements for New Virginia Lawyers

Information for New Virginia Lawyers

All attorneys licensed by the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners are required to register with the Virginia State Bar.

The Virginia State Bar Regulatory Compliance department will send emails containing registration information to each newly licensed lawyer on Wednesday, April 28, 2021.

The Court will conduct a virtual Admission Ceremony for applicants passing the February 2021 bar exam on June 2, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. For additional information click here.

Click here to access the Sponsor List for the June 2, 2021 Remote Admission Ceremony. Use this list to fill in the “Introduced by” line on the oath card you received with your license letter (use the name listed beside the law school you attended. Note: out-of-state law schools will be introduced together with a single sponsor).

Newly admitted active lawyers are exempt from the MCLE requirement for the year in which they are licensed. (The MCLE year runs from November 1 to October 31.) Your first compliance deadline will be October 31, 2022. Read more MCLE FAQs for newly licensed attorneys.

Lawyers registering as active must also take the mandatory Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course—required within one year of licensing. However, due to the COVID-19 health crisis, course attendance compliance deadlines have been extended. Members who are required to attend the course will be notified by email as soon as courses are scheduled in 2021. For additional information on the professionalism course click here.
