LEGAL ASSISTANT

The Virginia State Bar is searching for an efficient and self-motivated legal assistant to provide administrative and litigation support for trial attorneys who process ethical complaints against lawyers. The successful candidate will prepare, revise, and finalize correspondence and pleadings; organize and file subpoena responses; prepare and electronically file exhibits; maintain electronic files, tickler systems, and dockets; and perform special projects. This position will also provide back-up support to the complaint intake process by receiving and processing complaints from the public, lawyers, judges, and other court officials. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled assistant to learn and be involved in all phases of the disciplinary process and other responsibilities within the Office of Bar Counsel. 

The selected candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, experience working in a legal environment, preferably at a litigation law firm, and the following requirements:

  • knowledge of business, office management, and legal processes
  • strong organizational skills
  • superior writing and communication skills
  • computer-savvy and proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, Adobe, and electronic filing systems
  • detail-oriented, dependable, proactive
  • have good judgment and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • able to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • comfortable working under pressure within tight deadlines 
  • satisfactory completion of criminal background check
