DEPUTY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Virginia State Bar seeks an energetic, forward looking individual to assist the executive director with all internal and external operations.  Working collaboratively with the executive and senior management team, this position will advise staff and volunteers about state procedures and legal requirements; oversee bar compliance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act and Conflict of Interests Act; work broadly and strategically on complex policy, legal, and administrative matters; and help identify, drive, and communicate organizational priorities, partnerships, infrastructure, and budgetary needs for achieving bar goals and objectives.  In addition, this position will represent the bar to the public and key stakeholders; serve as the Bar’s liaison to the General Assembly; monitor legislation; develop thought leadership around specific topics/emerging areas of interest; and assist with the preparation and dissemination of communications.  The deputy executive director also provides executive oversight to several departments and bar functions.

To successfully support the executive director, the selected candidate will have a license to practice law in Virginia, a comprehensive knowledge of Virginia’s legal system and inter-government relations, and the following qualifications and/or personal characteristics:

  • Experience in leadership/management positions, or a history of roles with increasing responsibility

  • An ability to serve as a forward-thinking partner to the executive director, providing, support, guidance, and recommendations on bar short-term and long-term goals

  • Strong management skills

  • An ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work under pressure

  • Strong strategic, analytical, and planning skills

  • A record of providing leadership and creative solutions to problems

  • Research and project management skills

  • A demonstrated ability to use common sense and good judgment

  • Superior verbal, written, and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency with software technology and an awareness of emerging digital technologies

  • Resourcefulness and a results-oriented, detail-oriented work ethic

  • Flexibility to adapt to novel tasks and challenges

  • Successful completion of background check
