ASSISTANT ETHICS COUNSEL

The Virginia State Bar, the regulatory agency for the legal profession in Virginia, has an immediate opening for a highly motivated and experienced attorney to work as an Assistant Ethics Counsel. The VSB Ethics department provides advice to bar members, judges, and out-of-state attorneys on various professional regulation issues, including but not limited to legal ethics, lawyer advertising, and unauthorized practice of law. Ethics staff also interpret statutes and rules relating to the regulation of the legal profession, draft legal ethics opinions and rule amendments, develop and present legal education programs, and provide counsel and support to assigned committees, tasks forces, and work groups. This position requires occasional overnight travel.

The selected candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school 
  • Active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar with no disciplinary record
  • Prior experience, preferably in private practice in one or more areas of criminal, family, personal injury, estate planning and/or real estate law.  
  • General knowledge of the practice of law and understanding of the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, research, interpret, and apply legal principles and knowledge to complex legal problems
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound and practical recommendations based on logical analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to handle time-sensitive inquiries quickly and effectively, while maintaining confidentiality
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office 
  • Comfortable working with others in a collaborative work environment 
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Strong organization and planning skills, including attention to detail
  • Successful completion of criminal background check and employment references
