Sponsored by the Governor's Office

Wills for Heroes is a national program developed in response to the events of September 11, 2001, when it was discovered many first responders did not have any estate planning in place.  In Virginia, Wills for Heroes is jointly sponsored by the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference and the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.  The Wills for Heroes Program provides free basic estate planning documents (Will, Power of Attorney, and Advance Medical Directive) to first responders and their spouses, which are prepared by volunteer attorneys using the “HotDocs” document assembly program.

The key to the success of Wills for Heroes is YOU, the volunteer!

NO ESTATE PLANNING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY

All Virginia-licensed attorneys are encouraged to participate.  We are also seeking volunteers to serve as notaries and witnesses (non-attorneys welcome).

What do you need to do to participate?

First, Virginia-licensed attorneys will first attend a mandatory Wills for Heroes CLE, which includes an introduction to basic estate planning in Virginia, provides an overview of the Wills for Heroes program, explains the document templates, and discusses the logistics of the program.  Refreshments will be provided.  CLE credit will be given to Virginia attorneys who volunteer for at least one shift during the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremony Days.  Those volunteering in the capacity of a notary or witness need not attend the Attorney CLE.  RSVP by October 15th for the Mandatory Attorney CLE at http://bit.ly/WFHattorneyCLE.

Second, all volunteers will sign up to participate in at least one four and one-half (4.5) hour shift on one of the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremonies Days.  Refreshments will be provided to volunteers throughout the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremony Days.  Sign up for your volunteer shift at http://bit.ly/WFHvolunteer no later than October 15th.
