Communications Coordinator (Richmond)

The Virginia State Bar, the state agency that regulates Virginia’s lawyers, has an opening for a Communications Coordinator/journalist to perform key copywriting, web-related duties, and assist with publications. The coordinator will write feature stories for and help edit Virginia Lawyer magazine and will write press releases and news items for the VSB website. The coordinator will be responsible for updating the VSB’s social media outlets, production of bar newsletters, e-blasts to bar members, and daily website updates. The person also will serve as an assistant advertising manager for Virginia Lawyer magazine and be responsible for soliciting ads. Occasional work required at night or on weekends for media coverage. Trial Attorney (Richmond)

City Attorney (City of Hopewell)

The historic City of Hopewell, located at the confluence of the Appomattox and James Rivers is seeking applications for the position of City Attorney. Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited law school, with admission to the Virginia State Bar and five to ten years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of law. Past local government experience is desirable. Per the City Charter, the City Attorney shall be the chief legal advisor of the council and the chief administrative officer. As designated by council, the city attorney also shall serve as the chief legal advisor to other departments, boards, commissions, and agencies of the city in all matters affecting the interests of the city. The successful applicant must demonstrate a broad range of experience and knowledge of Virginia law, and a high level of knowledge and performance in local government, including Roberts Rules of Order.  Membership in local government organizations and attendance of continuing education seminars specializing in local government is required of the successful candidate—all dues and fees related thereto will be reimbursed. The salary for the position is negotiable. Benefits include participation in the Virginia Retirement System, vacation and sick leave, group life insurance, and medical insurance. Residency within the City is required within a negotiated period of time. The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit is accepting applications for the position of Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Virginia.

Position Overview
The Federal Public Defender, functioning under the authority of 18 U.S.C. Section 3006A(h)(1)(A) and the Criminal Justice Act Plan of the District, provides criminal defense services to individuals unable to afford counsel. In addition, the Federal Public Defender supervises a staff of trial attorneys, investigators, and support personnel.

Required Qualifications
Applicants must satisfy the following conditions: (1) be a member in good standing in the bar of the state in which the candidate is admitted to practice; (2) have a minimum of 5 years of criminal practice, preferably with significant federal criminal trial experience, which demonstrates an ability to provide zealous representation of consistently high quality to criminal defendants; (3) the ability to effectively administer the office; (4) a reputation for integrity; and (5) a commitment to the representation of those unable to afford counsel.

Conditions of Employment
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or be eligible to work in the United States and receive compensation. The final candidate will be subject to a full background and appropriate financial disclosure regulations. The Federal Public Defender may not engage in the private practice of law. Employees are required to use Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) for payroll deposits. Reimbursement for interview-related travel expenses and relocation are not provided.
