The Trusts and Estates Section had 1,018 members as of July 2017, and 1,951 members as of June 2018, making the Section the 4th largest specialty section of the Bar. 


The budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 was $14,888. The budget proposed for 2018-2019 is $14,936. 

36th Annual Trusts and Estates Seminar 

In October, the Trusts and Estates Section co-sponsored the 36th Annual Trusts and Estates Seminar with Virginia CLE. The program was held in Roanoke, Williamsburg and Fairfax. In addition to the usual surveys of Federal and Virginia law developments and ethics, topics included foundational estate administration issues, “portability’s” impact on transfer tax planning and planning options in connection with modifying/adjusting irrevocable trust agreements. 

VSB Annual Meeting CLE Program 

Also in March, the Trusts and Estates Section agreed to sponsor a CLE presentation regarding guardian ad litem for the Annual Meeting to be held in June 2018. The program took place on June 15, 2018. 

Member Communications 

The Trusts and Estates Section published two newsletters, one in the Fall of 2017 and another in the Spring of 2018. Each edition included articles on relevant and timely trusts and estates topics and was distributed to all members of the section. Carter R. Brothers was the Newsletter Editor, and Trey T. Parker was the Assistant Newsletter Editor.
