The Trusts and Estates Section had 1,904 members as of June 2019 and 1,979 members as of June 2020. 


The budget for fiscal year 2019-2020 was $14,936. The budget proposed for fiscal year 2020-2021 is $14,624. 

38th Annual Trusts and Estates Seminar 

In October, the Trusts and Estates Section co-sponsored the 38th Annual Trusts and Estates Seminar with Virginia CLE. The program was held in Roanoke, Fairfax and Williamsburg. The topics included: important updates on federal and Virginia tax developments, cases and legislation, estate planning and trust administration practices that limit exposure in the event of divorce, understanding fiduciary income tax from death to trust termination, learning how to navigate the perfect storm involving the elderly client and the dysfunctional family. 

VSB Annual Meeting CLE Program 

The Section planned to offer an exciting CLE Seminar cosponsored with the Family Law Section, during the VSB 82ndannual meeting, but due to the Coronavirus, the annual meeting was cancelled for the first time since WWII.  We hope to be able to present this Seminar next year, in 2021!

Member Communications 

The Trusts and Estates Section published two newsletters, one in the Fall of 2019 and another in the Spring of 2020. Each edition included articles on relevant and timely trusts and estates topics and were distributed to all members of the section, both in print version and on our website.  Vanessa M. Stillman was the Newsletter Editor, Kevin Stemple was the Assistant Newsletter Editor.

New Officers for 2020 – 2021 Bar Year

Carter R. Brothers will be the Section Chair, Trey T. Parker will be the Vice Chair, Vanessa M. Stillman will be the Secretary, Kevin Stemple will be the Newsletter Editor.  Our new board member will be Brooke Tansill.  They will do a wonderful job of leading the Section.
