Trusts and Estates Section

The Trusts and Estates Section had 1,727 members as of July 2013, and 1,813 members as of June 2014.

The budget for fiscal year 2013-2014 was $13,808.  The proposed budget for 2014-2015 is $13,984.

Special Activities
The section published two newsletters, one in the fall of 2013 and another in the spring of 2014.  Each edition included several articles on trust and estates topics and was distributed to all members of the section by e-mail. 

31st Annual Trusts and Estates Seminar
In October 2013, the section co-sponsored the 32nd Annual Trusts and Estates Seminar with Virginia CLE. In addition to the usual surveys of Federal and Virginia law developments and ethics, topics covered included: estate tax portability planning, estate planning for digital assets, modifying irrevocable trusts, and ethical challenges in intra family transfers.

2014 VSB Annual Meeting CLE Program
The section co-sponsored “Family Feuds, Shareholder Oppression and Judicial Remedies” with the Business Law Section which was presented in Virginia Beach as part of the VSB annual meeting.  The program covered the corporate, trust, and psychological issues encountered in the battles for control over Luray Caverns, Disthene Inc., and the Cavalier Hotel.  Included in the presentation was a discussion of the business judgment rule, the rights of minority shareholders and the duties of controlling shareholders, trustee fiduciary duties, and the practical limitations and administration of trusts.
