Trusts and Estates Section

In July 2010, the Trusts and Estates Section had 1,620 members. As of July 2011, membership in the Section had increased to 1,641 members. 

The budget for fiscal 2010-11 was $12,960.  The budget proposed for 2011-12 is $12,800. The primary expense items are the costs for speakers at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting and the Midyear Legal Seminar, costs for production and distribution of the section newsletter, and costs for the section website.

Annual Meeting CLE program

At the annual meeting in Virginia Beach in June 2011, the Trusts and Estates Section sponsored a continuing legal education program by Tom H. Campbell with Yates, Campbell and Hoeg LLP. The presentation covered two topics: “Still Crazy After All These Years,” about the current estate of the estate tax laws, and “The Dead Hand Is Not Dead,” about incentive trusts.

Midyear Legal Seminar

The section sponsored a proposal from Julie A. King for presentation at the VSB Midyear Legal Seminar, to be held in November 2011. Ms. King’s proposal was accepted, and she will be speaking on “The Tax Relief Act of 2010: Temporary Relief and Opportunities for Clients, Planning Challenges for Attorneys.” The section will pay for Ms. King’s attendance and participation from its 2011-2012 budget.

Member communications

The Trusts and Estates Section published newsletters in fall 2010 and spring 2011. Each edition included several articles on trusts and estates topics and was distributed to all members of the section by either email or print.

Beginning with the spring 2012 edition, the section newsletter will be distributed to section members by only e-mail. Copies will no longer be printed and mailed.

Section website

The section board of governors approved several modifications to the section website to make it more useful for the members and the public. Section newsletters from the most recent five years prior to the current year will be made available to the public on the section site. In addition, beginning in fiscal 2012, minutes of board of governors meetings will be made available on the site. The bylaws for the section will also be made available on the site.

Amendment to bylaws

The board approved amendments to the bylaws for the section to add management of the section website to the duties of the vice chair and to reduce from three to two the number of section newsletters required to be published each year.


Officers elected for 2011-12 are Martha L. Sotelo, chair; Southy E. Walton, vice chair; Nathan R. Olansen, secretary; C. Arthur Robinson II, newsletter editor; and Jennifer E. Shirkey, assistant newsletter editor. Neal P. Brodsky is immediate past chair.
