Senior Lawyers Conference

Robert E. Hawthorne, Chair

The Senior Lawyers Conference (SLC) has had a good year.  Membership as of May 18, 2018, stood at 19,526 members.  All lawyers licensed in the State of Virginia over the age of 55 years are automatically members of the SLC.

Several Senior Law Day programs have been presented around the state this year utilizing the Senior Citizens Handbook that is a publication of the SLC.  Discussions have been held at SLC board meetings about updating the handbook in the near future.

Considerable effort has been made this year in dealing with the stress and substance abuse issues of lawyers.  At the request of Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons of the Virginia Supreme Court, the board did an extensive review of the report on lawyer health and reported the results of our deliberations.

The SLC sponsored the April 2018 edition of Virginia Lawyer magazine, contributing articles and being featured on the cover.

The SLC sponsored a brunch for the presentation of recognition for the members of the Virginia State Bar who have been members for 50 years.  The brunch was held on Saturday, June 16, 2018, as part of the VSB Annual Meeting.

Serving as chair of the SLC this year has been a rewarding and an education experience, and I am appreciative of the support and assistance I have received from the board members and the staff of the Bar.
