Real Property Section

C. Cooper Youell, IV, Chair

Membership: As of June 15, 2015, the Section had 1,908 members.

Budget:  The beginning budget for 2014-15 was $36,020.00.  The balance remaining at the end of the fiscal year was 6,155.58.


The Board of Governors and Area Representatives met four times:

Fall Meeting – September 12, 2014, at the offices of Virginia CLE, located at 105 Whitewood Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Winter Meeting – January 23, 2015, at the Williamsburg Inn, Williamsburg (during the VBA Annual Meeting).

Spring Meeting – March 6, 2015, at the Kingsmill Resort, Williamsburg (before the Section’s 19th Annual Advanced Real Estate Seminar).

Annual Meeting of the Section & Board of Governors & Area Representatives – June 19, 2015, at the Oceanaire Resort Hotel, 3421 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach.

Educational Activities:  The Section sponsored, with Virginia CLE, the 19th Annual Advanced Real Estate Seminar on March 6-7, 2015 (at Kingsmill Resort), and the 33nd Annual Real Estate Practice Seminar on May 12, 19 and 20, 2015 (Roanoke, Williamsburg and Fairfax), and presented a Showcase CLE program (with two other sections) entitled “Contracts Gone Bad:  The Litigator’s Wish List for Transactional Lawyers” on June 19, 2015, at the VSB Annual Meeting.

Other educational activities included:

  • Publication of the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 issues of The Fee Simple (Volume XXXV, Number 2 and Volume XXXVI, Number 1, respectively), the Section’s newsletter. 

  • Providing Section members a tuition credit of $40 per person at the Section’s Advanced Real Estate Seminar and $15 per person at the Section’s Annual Real Estate Practice Seminar.

  • Co-sponsoring, with Virginia CLE, the Courtland Traver Award, presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions to continuing legal education.  The 2015 recipient of the Traver Award was Paula Caplinger.

Other Activities:

  • The Section participated in the VSB’s annual “First Day of Practice” seminar held on December 2, 2014

  • The Section’s Membership Committee, chaired by Philip Hart, contacted a number of the law schools to offer vouchers to allow students to attend the Section’s Annual Real Estate Practice Seminar at no cost.  In connection therewith, two students attended the Annual Real Estate Practice Seminar in Williamsburg.

  • A number of Section members have been actively involved with an advanced real estate class at the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond.

Election of Officers and New Board of Governors Members:  The Section’s Nominating Committee met by phone and e-mail during the Spring, and at the Section’s Annual Meeting on June 13, 2014 presented the following slate of candidates for Section offices and Board vacancies, all of whom were elected and took office on July 1, 2015:
