Minutes of the 81st Annual Meeting

President Leonard C. Heath Jr. called the General Session of the 81st Annual Meeting of the Virginia State Bar to order at 9 a.m. on June 15, 2019, at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel. He introduced Marni E. Byrum, the incoming president, who had been sworn in by retired Supreme Court of Virginia Justice Elizabeth C. Lacy the previous evening. 

Report of Council Actions 

Heath reported that council had taken the following actions at its meeting on June 13: 

  • Council approved by unanimous vote the proposed amendments to VSB bylaws changing the Access to Legal Services Committee from a “Special” to “Standing” Committee, effective immediately.
  • Council approved by unanimous vote the proposed amendments to Paragraph 13
  • Council unanimously approved revisions to LEO 1750 – Lawyer Advertising and Solicitation.
  • Council unanimously approved revisions to LEO 1872 – Virtual Law Office and Use of Executive Office Suites.
  • Council approved by unanimous vote the proposed amendments to Rule 4.4(b) – respect for the rights of third persons. 

Introduction of President-elect Buniva

Byrum introduced Brian L. Buniva of Richmond who won election for president-elect. Buniva graciously accepted the responsibility. On motion made, seconded, and unanimously approved, Brian L. Buniva was formally elected as president-elect for the 2020-2021 bar year.

Tradition of Excellence Award 

John Randolph “Randy” Nelson of Lynchburg received the General Practice Section Tradition of Excellence Award from Christopher C. Johnson, chair of the section. The award is given each year by the General Practice Section to a lawyer who exemplifies professional and public service.
