Funds and Budget:

The Military Law Section began the year with $3,712.00, spent $1,756.72, leaving a balance of $ 1,955.28.

Section Activities:

The Military Law Section had a successful year! As in past years, the Military Law Section  partnered with Virginia CLE to present our Annual Military Law Symposium in Quantico, Virginia on May 17, 2019 titled Serving Those Who Serve.  The program received rave reviews and included presentations on the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act, the significant changes to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Legal Ethics, and an enthraling presentation on International Humanitarian Law and War Crimes. Faculty included faculty members from the University of Vermont, the Army Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, as well as attorneys from the Department of Justice (Servicemembers and Veterans Initiative, Civil Division, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia), The Navy Region Legal Service Office Mid-Atlantic, the Virginia State Bar, and private law firms. Once again, the program was an outstanding success.

Newsletter Editor Wilson Mustain worked hard to put out our first Newsletter since 2015. Articles included: Message from the Chair, Standing the Watch for Our Servicemembers’ Due Process Rights, Practice Pitfalls: Compensating for VA Setoffs and Waivers in Equitable Distribution of Military Retired Pay, and The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act and the Department of Justice.

The MLS partnered with the Special Committee on Future Law Practice to sponsor a program on Artificial Intelligence, Block Chain, Cryptocurrency and the Future of Law Practice at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach. We also held our Annual Membership Luncheon in Virginia Beach to correspond with the VSB Annual Meeting.

Special thanks go to my Vice Chair, Prescott L. Prince, Board Secretary, Dwain Alexander, Newsletter Editor Wilson Mustain, the entire Board of Governors, and our VSB Liaison, Mallory Ralston for all of their support. We could not of accomplished all we did without their hard work and support.

At the VSB annual meeting in June of 2019, the membership elected new BOG members and the following officers:

Prescott L. Prince, Chair
Oliver L. Norrell, III, Vice Chair
Dwain Alexander, Secretary
Peter J. Jankell; Immediate Past Chair

Respectfully submitted:

Peter J. Jankell
