Litigation Section

Timothy Kirtner, Chair

Our section currently numbers 3,257 members.

  • During the 2014-15 fiscal year, our section again co-sponsored the Law in Society Essay Contest in conjunction with the State Bar and the Communications Committee of the State Bar.  Our section provided financial support for the Law in Society Essay Contest, funding the Bar’s efforts to distribute the Contest hypothetical throughout the Commonwealth and also funding prizes for the contest winners.  Our section members also participated as judges of the fifty-seven (57) essays received in this year’s contest.  We presented the top prize at the Annual Meeting in June.  Our section has been the sponsor of the Law in Society Essay Contest since its inception and will continue to be actively involved, both in terms of providing funding and personnel, to continue to grow the contest in future years.
  • Our section co-sponsored a showcase CLE at the Annual Meeting.  A CLE co-sponsored with the Business Section, was entitled “Contracts Gone Bad”.  The program had approximately 190 attendees.
  • No significant issues arose requiring resolution in the 2014-15 fiscal year.  Looking ahead to the 2015-16 fiscal year, the Board of Governors did begin to grapple with the question of how to reallocate funds that had been budgeted to send Litigation Section representatives to the Mid-year Conference to present a CLE.  Plans to donate funds to the Hill-Tucker Program were scuttled based upon the constitutional prohibition on state agencies donating to non-profit organizations.  Discussions continue as to how those funds might be used consistent with the mission of the Litigation Section.
  • The new chair of the Litigation Section for the 2015-16 fiscal year is Kristin Burch, partner at Kaufman & Canoles.  The vice-chair is Jeff Stredler, General Counsel for WellPoint.  The Secretary is Jim Martin from the Danville Law firm of Martin and Martin.
