  • In conjunction with the Virginia State Bar’s Communications Committee, the Litigation Section has been a cosponsor of the Law in Society Essay Contest since its inception. The section again provided financial support for the contest this past year, funding the Bar’s efforts to distribute the contest hypothetical throughout the Commonwealth and also funding prizes for the contest winners. Section members also participated as judges of the essays received during this year’s contest.  The section presented the top prize during the State Bar’s Annual Meeting in June to Evangeline Ellis of George Mason High School.  Per direction of the Virginia State Bar, this is the last year of this program.
  • In an effort to provide additional benefits to its members, the section sponsored a two-hour CLE for its members this past May.  The program entitled, Social Media for Litigators:  Admissibility and Ethical Requirements, featured Les S. Bowers from Gentry Locke in Roanoke and David W. Thomas from MichieHamlett in Charlottesville.  The program was well-received, with approximately 60 attendees via webinar hosted by the Virginia CLE office.
  • The section supported a special program, Rule of Law Day at the Capitol, sponsored by the Young Lawyers Conference this spring. The program’s goal is to educate at-risk middle and high school students about rule of law principles and operations of their state government. The section provided financial support for the program. 
  • The section electronically published two issues of Litigation News this year. 
  • In conjunction with the Construction Law and Public Contracts Section and the Joint ADR Committee, the section presented a showcase CLE at the Virginia State Bar’s Annual Meeting on expert witnesses. The panel featured the Honorable Robert S. Ballou, Brian C. Riopelle at McGuire Woods, and Lauren P. McLaughlin at BrigliaMcLaughlin PLLC and was moderated by Kristan B. Burch at Kaufman & Canoles, P.C. The program was very well received with approximately 200 attendees.
  • The section held its annual business meeting in conjunction with the State Bar’s Annual Meeting in June 2016, in Virginia Beach. The following officers and board members were elected: James V. Martin, chair; Nathan J.D. Veldhuis, vice chair;  Matthew Haynes, secretary; and W. Bradford Stallard, treasurer; Judge Jeffrey W. Parker, board member; Kevin Gerrity, board member; Brian Wheeler, board member; Brian Schneider, board member; and Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, board member.
