  • In conjunction with the Virginia State Bar’s Communications Committee, the Litigation Section has been a cosponsor of the Law in Society Essay Contest since its inception. The section again provided financial support for the contest this past year, funding the Bar’s efforts to distribute the contest hypothetical throughout the Commonwealth and also funding prizes for the contest winners. Section members also participated as judges of the approximately 200 essays received during this year’s contest.  The section presented the top prize during the State Bar’s Annual Meeting in June to Claire Dozier of McLean High School.  The section will continue to be actively involved in this program, both in terms of providing funding and personnel.
  • In an effort to provide additional benefits to its members, the section sponsored a free, two-hour CLE for its members this past May.  The program entitled, The Art and Science of Mastering the Jury Trial , featured Irvin V. Cantor and Stephanie E. Grana from Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana Buckner in Richmond.  The program was extremely well-received, with approximately 150 attendees via webinar and 50 attendees for the live program held at McGuireWoods, in Richmond.
  • The section supported a special program, Rule of Law Day at the Capitol, sponsored by the Young Lawyers Conference this spring. The program’s goal is to educate at-risk middle and high school students about rule of law principles and operations of their state government. The section provided financial support for refreshments and materials for the students who participated.
  • The section electronically published two issues of Litigation New this year.
  • In conjunction with the Construction Law and Local Government Law sections, the section presented a showcase CLE at the Virginia State Bar’s Annual Meeting entitled, Official Acts and Honest Services in the Wake of U.S. v. McDonnell. The panel featured Senator Thomas V. Norment, Jr. (Senate of Virginia); Thomas T. Cullen (Woods Rogers); Hunter W. Sims (Kaufman & Canoles, PC), and Roger C. Wiley (Hefty Wiley & Gore PC) with the panel moderated by Daniel L. Fitch (Wharton Aldhizer & Weaver). The program was very well received with approximately 200 attendees.
