The Litigation Section’s membership as of June 30, 2018 was 3,237, making this the largest section of the Virginia State Bar. Our budget for 2017-18 was $36,000.

In-person meetings of the Section Board were held on September 15, 2017 and February 16, 2018 (Richmond) and June 14, 2018 (Steinhilber’s, Virginia Beach), as well as telephonic meetings on November 17, 2017 and April 6, 2018.

W. Carter Younger, Esq. (Richmond) later became the new liaison from the Senior Lawyer’s Conference.

The board allocated $5,000 to the Virginia Supreme Court’s Rule of Law Day in Richmond on March 29, 2018.  All but $144 was spent on the program. On April 2, 2018, Virginia Supreme Court Justice Cleo E. Powell (member of Litigation Section Board of Governors, 2011-17) emailed “sincere and heartfelt thanks” for our “generous donation” on behalf of the Rule of Law Student’s Day at the Capitol Committee.

Fall & Spring Newsletters (November 2017 & May 2018) were published electronically under the direction of our newsletter editor, Professor Jennifer Franklin of William & Mary Law School.  These are available on the web site. 

A very successful and informative CLE Showcase was presented at the Annual Meeting in June 2018:  “Successful Appellate Practice from the Trial Court to the Appellate Court,” arranged by Nathan Veldhuis (incoming Litigation Section Board Chair) & Dan Fitch (Construction Law Section Board), with the following speakers:

            Hon. Michael F. Urbanski, U. S. District Judge, Roanoke

            Hon. Bernard S. Goodwyn, Justice, Supreme Court of Virginia

            Frank K. Friedman, Esq., of Woods Rogers PLC, Roanoke

            James Neale, Esq., of McGuire Woods LLP, Charlottesville   

The section held its annual business meeting in conjunction with the State Bar’s Annual Meeting in June 2018, in Virginia Beach.

The following officers and board members were elected: Nathan J.D. Veldhuis, chair; J. Matthew Haynes Jr., vice chair; W. Bradford Stallard, secretary; and Robert E. Byrne, Jr., treasurer; Michael J. Finney, was elected as a new member of the board of governors.

A dedicated issue of Virginia Lawyer magazine is planned for October 2018.
