Litigation

J. Matthew Haynes Jr., Chair

The Litigation Section continues to serve the needs of Virginia lawyers by providing a forum for the discussion of matters affecting the way in which litigation is conducted in the Commonwealth of Virginia, to sponsor projects and programs of educational value or special interest and relevance to the members of the Section; and to promote efforts aimed at improving the efficient, affordable, ethical, and just resolution of societal disputes.

The Litigation Section’s membership as of June 30, 2020 was 3,465 making this the largest section of the Virginia State Bar. Our budget for 2019-20 was $34,848.

Meetings of the Section Board were held on October 11, 2019 (Richmond), November 15, 2019 (Charlottesville), February 14, 2020 (Warrenton), and April 10, 2020 (Teleconference). The previously scheduled June meeting at Steinhilber’s was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The board allocated $5,000 of its budget to be split between the Chesterfield Rule of Law Day and the Virginia Supreme Court’s Rule of Law Day in Richmond. The Rule of Law Day programs were cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, backpacks for the students were purchased prior to the cancellation and were distributed to the students. Winners of the drawing competition for the art on the backpacks, and their teachers, will receive gift cards.

Two Spring 2020 CLEs were scheduled but had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The section hopes to present these programs later this year, either in person or via webinar.

The leadership of the Litigation Section for the upcoming year is: W. Bradford Stallard, chair; Robert E. Byrne, Jr., vice chair; Brian S. Wheeler, treasurer; J. Matthew Haynes Jr., immediate past chair; Andrew P. Connors, newsletter editor; E. Kyle McNew, appellate committee chair; Darius K.A. Davenport; Michael J. Finney; Jonathan P. Lienhard; Charisse M.
