Annual Meeting Program

The Litigation Section presented the showcase continuing legal education program at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in June 2010. Dean Rodney A. Smolla of the Washington & Lee University School of Law was moderator and provocateur, with a distinguished group of judges, public officials, practitioners, and law school deans in the program, “Chasing the Internet: Is the Law Keeping Up?” Scott C. Ford and Gary A. Bryant cochaired the program committee.

Law in Society Scholarship

The section sponsored the Law in Society essay contest in conjunction with the VSB Publications Department. Bar staff Nancy M. Brizendine and Rodney A. Coggin administered the program. In 2010, section members assisted with judging 282 entries from ninety-five high schools in Virginia. The top two prize winners and their families attended were recognized by the section during the annual meeting program, and they met with the contest judges and program panelists. The Law in Society Scholarship is a strong outreach program that contributes to the Virginia State Bar’s mission.


The section continues to publish the high-quality Litigation News under the leadership of Joseph M. Rainsbury of Roanoke. The newsletter offers a valuable resource to practitioners and an opportunity for section members to publish their work.

Five-Year Strategic Plan

The Section continues to implement its Five-Year Strategic Plan with a focus on high-quality CLE and publications to serve its members at the lowest possible cost.

Young Lawyers Committee

The section is working on sponsoring a series of regional outreach CLE programs in Fredericksburg and other locations. Nathan J. D. Veldhuis is leading this effort.

Midyear Legal Seminar

The section sponsored a CLE program, “Winning Discovery Strategies,” during the Midyear Legal Seminar in November 2009 in Marbella, Spain. Former chair Jennifer Leigh Parrish and Senior Justice Elizabeth B. Lacy were the presenters.

The section will sponsor “Trying Cases in a Better Way: Your Reputation Depends Upon It”  at the Midyear Seminar in November 2010 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Judges Rodham T. Delk Jr. and B. Waugh Crigler will present .

Appellate practice committee

The section’s appellate practice committee sponsored several regional CLE programs focusing on appellate practice topics. Committee Chair Monica T. Monday led this effort. The committee is now working on these programs in cooperation with the Virginia Bar Association Appellate Committee.

Officers and new members

New members of the Section Board of Governors for 2010-10 are James C. Martin of Danville and Kristine L.H. Smith of Lynchburg The 2010-11 officers are Robert L. Garnier, chair; Scott C. Ford, vice chair; Gary A. Bryant, secretary; and Barbara S. Williams, treasurer.
