Intellectual Property Law

Robert M. Tyler, Chair

The Intellectual Property Section continues to serve the needs of Virginia lawyers by advancing the quality of intellectual property law practice and striving to create opportunities for our members.

The Intellectual Property Section currently has 1,622 members.  The annual budget for the past fiscal year was $23,728.00 and has a remaining balance of $13,002.29.

The Board met quarterly throughout the year.  In September 2019, the section hosted a CLE entitled “VSB 31st Annual Intellectual Property Seminar”.  This was a two-day event held at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School in Fairfax.  The section also sponsored the Annual IP Writing Competition where Matt Pangle of the University of Richmond was the winner.  In June 2020, the section co-sponsored a non-CLE entitled “Scandalous Marks on Brunetti’s One-Year Anniversary:  The Decision’s Impact and the PTO’s Commonplace Words Doctrine.”

The Intellectual Property Section Board had planned to co-sponsor a CLE at the VSB Annual Meeting, but the Annual Meeting was cancelled due to the COVID19 pandemic.

The leadership of the Intellectual Property Section for the upcoming year is Tara A. Branscom, Chair; Robin C. Vance, Chair-Elect; Aaron L. Parker, Vice Chair; and Robert M. Michaux, Secretary.
