Activities & Continuing Legal Education

Writing Competition – For the third year in a row the section conducted a successful writing competition on health law topics for students in Virginia law schools.  Monetary awards and publication opportunities were granted to the winners. For information about the winners and topics, please click this link: writing competition. As part of this annual program, the Section worked with contacts at each public and private law school in Virginia to help promote the Section's writing competition.

National Healthcare Decisions Week – Since 2006, the section has helped promote an annual, statewide Healthcare Decisions Day to raise public awareness for the need to plan ahead for health care decisions related to end of life care and for medical decision-making.  This year's event was weeklong, from April 16-22, 2018.

Healthcare Decisionmaking Forms- The section worked with volunteers from the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy, and staff at the Virginia State Bar to revise and bring up to date all of the healthcare decisionmaking and advance directive forms on the VSB Health Section web page in advance of National Healthcare Decisions Week.

Collaboration with Antitrust Section-The HLS Chair worked with the Chair of the Antitrust Section to develop a CLE program regarding “Antitrust Perils in the New Era of Healthcare Consolidation” for the VSB Annual Meeting.  This program was ultimately not selected for presentation this year but may be resubmitted for the 2018-19 meeting.
