General Practice

Matthew J. Zwerdling, Chair

The General Practice Section continues to serve the needs of attorneys in the general practice of law and has done so since 1986. We continue to conduct legal education seminars and other activities to enhance the skills of Virginia lawyers.

As it has done in the past, the General Practice Section co-sponsored with the Young Lawyers Conference a seminar called the First Day in Practice Seminar in Richmond. The program provided a full day of seminars in twelve areas of the law and was tailored to lawyers who have just been admitted as members of the Bar to assist them as they embark on their new profession. The speakers were highly experienced in their fields, and we also enjoyed the participation of both active and retired judges from around the Commonwealth.

In addition, the General Practice Section presented its annual Tradition of Excellence Award, which recognizes an outstanding lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence in the practice of law in Virginia. This year the award was presented to Grayson P. “Gray” Hanes of McLean, Virginia. Gray was presented the award at the Annual Meeting of the Virginia State Bar, and the General Practice Section is proud to have such an esteemed and distinguished recipient for this year’s award.

At the beginning of the fiscal year, there were 526 attorneys/members and 104 judicial members of the section. Our budget for the fiscal year 2017-2018 was $16,600.00.

The General Practice Section would also like to welcome our new section liaison, Paulette Davidson. Paulette has been with the Virginia State Bar for over 25 years and her experience and expertise has been invaluable to our Board this past year. The General Practice Section would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Paulette as we look forward to next year.
