General Practice

Christopher C. Johnson, Chair

The General Practice Section continues to serve the needs of attorneys in the general practice of law and has done so since 1986. We continue to conduct legal education seminars and other activities to enhance the skills of Virginia lawyers.

This year, the General Practice Section co-sponsored with the Young Lawyers Conference a new seminar titled A Day in General Practice at the University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center in Richmond. The program provided a full day of seminars in twelve areas of the law and was tailored to lawyers who participate in the general practice of law. The speakers were highly experienced in their fields, and we also enjoyed the participation of both active and retired judges from around the Commonwealth. There were 70 attendees, plus speakers.

In addition, the General Practice Section chose the winner of its annual Tradition of Excellence Award, which recognizes an outstanding lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence in the practice of law in Virginia. This year’s winner was Michael McHale Collins of Covington, Virginia. Because the Virginia State Bar’s Annual Meeting was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, the award will be presented at the 2021 Annual Meeting. The General Practice Section is proud to have such an esteemed and distinguished recipient for this year’s award.

The leadership of the General Practice Section for the upcoming year is: Stephen  C. Hall, chair; J. Randolph Nelson, vice chair; Jeffrey C. Flax, secretary; Christopher C. Johnson, immediate past chair; John C. Johnson; Ronald A. Page, Jr.; Matthew J. Zwerdling; Grayson S. Johnson; Esther S. McGuinn; Thomas W. Nesbitt; Hunter R. Wells; Hon. Bonnie C. Davis, ex-officio judicial; and Hon. Bryan C. Dunkum, ex-officio judicial.

As of June 30, 2020, the section had 839 members. The budget for Fiscal Year 2019-2020 was $16,296.

The General Practice Section would also like to thank our section liaison, Paulette Davidson. Paulette has been with the Virginia State Bar for over 30 years and her experience and expertise have been invaluable to our Board this past year. The General Practice Section would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Paulette as we look forward to next year.
