Corporate Counsel

Mark E. Newcomb, Chair

In June 2019, the Corporate Counsel Section (“Section”) had approximately 1,651 members.  The Section is the 7th largest of the twenty sections of the Virginia State Bar.

Special Activities in Fiscal Year 2018-2019

Per the request of Judge David Lannetti, the Section reviewed the “Corporate” hypotheticals used in the Virginia State Bar Professionalism Course for new Virginia attorneys and proposed a new hypothetical question and made a recommendation on splitting out the pro bono questions into a separate section.

Annual Meeting CLE Programs

The Section co-sponsored the CLE course at the VSB Annual Meeting entitled, “Why Go to Europe When Europe Comes to You?  U.S. Data Protection in a GDPR World” along with the IP and Business Law sections. The CLE was presented by Corina San Marina of Willcox & Savage; Gerard M. Stegmaier of Reed Smith; and Michael Bahar of Eversheds Surtherland.

Member Communication

This past year we sent out several emails to the membership informing them of relevant CLE opportunities. In May, NVA hosted a luncheon with an opportunity for members to network and receive 1.5 Ethics CLEs.

Law Student Seminars

The Section continued its practice of hosting panel presentations over lunch at Virginia law schools to share information and insights on in-house practice. This year, the Section was able to present a panel discussion at five of the eight law schools.
