Special Committee on Seminars

The principal function of this committee is to plan upcoming Midyear Legal Seminars. Members of the committee for the last year included: Michael Blair, Irving M. Blank, James O. Broccoletti, John E. Byrnes; Richard L. Camaur, Judge Glenn R. Croshaw, Wayne F. Cyron, Judge Thomas V. Forehand, Jr., Sean P. Kelly, James W. Korman, Margaret A. Nelson, Stephen A. Strickler, Cathleen A. Tucker, Judge George D. Varoutsos, Edward L. Weiner, and William L. Schmidt, ex officio.

The 2013 Midyear Seminar was held at the Paris Westin Place Vendôme, November 6-12, with a pre-trip to Marseilles, France. Approximately 170 attorneys and spouses were in attendance. The CLE program included two three-hour presentations: Aberrant Jury Outcomes, sponsored by the Litigation Section; Adam and Steve, Anna and Eve: Domestic Partnerships in Virginia, sponsored by the Family Law Section; and two one hour technology presentations: Through a Glass, Darkly: The Future of Law and Ethical Use of Social Media. In addition, there was a Comparative Law Symposium entitled, The French Legal System in Less than a Nutshell – with an Introduction to European Human Rights Law, featuring Dr. John Warwick Montgomery, of Strasbourg, France. The symposium was followed by a reception and luncheon.  The seminar qualified for a total of nine hours of MCLE credit, including one hour of ethics.

The Midyear Legal Seminar Committee also finalized plans for the 2014 seminar which will be held at the Westin Palace Madrid, November 4-11, with a post-trip to Barcelona, Spain. Approximately 120 lawyers, spouses and guests are currently registered for the Spain seminar.
