Officers for the 2019-2020 Fiscal Year:

·      Manolita A. Holadia, Chair

The Bench Bar Relations Committee ("BBRC") continues to serve the needs of Virginia judges and lawyers by supporting and improving the administration of justice, enhancing service to the community and increasing professionalism and collegiality within Virginia’s legal system.

This year the BBRC was composed of 18 members, including, Manolita Akiko Holadia, Esq., Chair, Nupur Sidhu Bal, Esq., Vice Chair, the Hon. William Cleveland Mims, the Hon. Robert J. Humphreys, the Hon. Joseph Walton Milam, Jr., the Hon. William Allan Sharrett, the Hon. Colleen Kearns Killilea, the Hon. Ashley K. Tunner, the Hon. Robert Ferrell Newman, Marni Elaine Byrum, Esq., President of the VSB, Brian Lawrence Buniva, Esq., President-Elect of the VSB, Leonard Claro Heath, Jr., Esq., Immediate Past President of the VSB, Llezelle Agustin Dugger, Esq., Anneshia Michel Miller Grant, Esq., Charlene Louise Hinton, Esq., Kamala Hallgren Lannetti, Esq., Lesley Pate Marlin, Esq., Douglas Bradley Marshall, Esq., Matthew Robert McGuire, Esq., Gordon Carl Ufkes, Esq., and Edward Laurence Weiner, Esq.

The Bench Bar Relations Committee held the following meetings this year, September 18, 2019 – Virginia State Bar, Richmond, and January 15, 2020 - Virginia State Bar, Richmond. Due to the novel coronavirus and COVID-19, meetings scheduled for March and May were cancelled. Despite the abbreviated Bar year, the BBRC did publish an Op-Ed in the Richmond Times Dispatch extolling the virtues of Virginia’s judicial selection process. This informational article coincided with the 2019 General Assembly election and provided an opportunity for Virginia voters to better understand the benefits of a non-partisan judiciary. The article can be found here:

RTD Op/Ed

It has been a great privilege and honor to serve with all the distinguished members of this Committee.  Among other endeavors to serve the bench, bar and community, we made recommendations in the Judicial Performance Evaluation Program; we provided suggestions to the YLC Bench-Bar Relations Guide; and our Judiciary members participated in VSB seminars (or recruited other judges) located in the far reaches of our Commonwealth.  Unfortunately, the pandemic delayed Judge Killilea's presentation on the Citizen Court Academy.  If this program is promoted by our Committee, it will educate the public about the administration of justice in our Commonwealth and will not only assist any person seeking access to our system but reveal that our system purposes to benefit all and exclude none.

The leadership of the BBRC for the upcoming Bar year will be the Honorable Colleen Killilea, Chair and Nupur Bal, Vice Chair.

Finally, I would like to conclude by thanking those who, like me, will be rotating off the committee after years of dedicated service; and we wish to welcome those new members coming aboard to serve on the BBRC.
