The Bench-Bar Relations Committee met on the following dates at the following locations:

January 24, 2018 – Virginia State Bar, Richmond

March 22, 2018 – Virginia State Bar, Richmond

The committee focused this year on hearing from speakers on various issues.  Paulette Davidson, VSB staff liaison for the Conference of Local & Specialty Bar Associations, provided information at each committee meeting on the status of speakers and topics for the upcoming Solo & Small Firm Forums that were being held on May 4, 2018 in Abingdon and May 10, 2018 in Hampden-Sydney, as well as the development of additional programs.

Pat Davis, Program Director of the Judicial Performance Evaluation Program, gave an update at the January 2018 meeting on the Judicial Performance Evaluation process and answered questions from the committee.

Circuit Court Judge Lowe of Abingdon gave a report on the Abingdon program, which had 140 attendees.  The program did not have a specific theme, but was designed to provide helpful information to the attendees.  The topics included how to perfect an appeal in a divorce case, ethical competence in the digital era, wills and financial accounts, and a legislative update from Delegate Kilgore.

Ms. Davidson gave a report at the May 2018 meeting on the Hampden-Sydney Solo & Small Firm Forum, which was attended by 89 lawyers.  Among other speakers, Erin Page gave a well-received lesson on practice pointers for Fastcase, and Justice Powell spoke on things going on at the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Judge John Gibney and Henry Willett, both of Richmond, rotated off the committee as of June 30, 2018, after six years of service.  Manolita Holadia of Virginia Beach will serve as chair during the 2018-2019 bar year.
