Special Committee on Bench-Bar Relations

Jonathan T. Blank, chair

The Bench-Bar Relations Committee had an exciting year. The committee met on the following dates at the following locations:

  • September 12, 2012 – Virginia State Bar, Richmond
  • January 19, 2013 – Virginia State Bar, Richmond
  • April 26, 2013 – Southwest Higher Education Center, Abingdon
  • May 8, 2013 - Virginia State Bar, Richmond

The committee also utilized video teleconferencing, which worked well.

Thanks to our President W. David Harless, the committee added a number of new members. They include:  Honorable Pamela S. Baskervill; Honorable John A. Gibney Jr., Honorable Charles R. Lowe; and Henry I. Willett III.

The committee chair also was turned over from Jonathan Blank at the end of May 2013 to W. Hunter and Honorable Colleen K. Killilea, Vice-Chair.

The committee also accepted a role that will hopefully define the committee’s activity for years to come. President Harless spearheaded the effort to establish regional bench-bar conferences, the first taking place in Abingdon. The Bench-Bar Relations Committee unanimously endorsed the program and became a sponsor. The committee also accepted the role of fostering the creation of future bench-bar conferences. The committee’s role will be to provide its name as well as support in the form of speakers, written material, and logistics. The committee also participated in the Bar Leadership Conference in Richmond where it promoted the regional bench-bar conference idea and experience.
