The Award for Excellence in Wellness & Well-Being in the Legal Profession

The VSB Conference of Local & Specialty Bar Associations (CLSBA) is pleased to recognize and honor Virginia lawyers, retired judges, bar associations, law firms, corporate law departments, government law departments and agencies, law schools, or other legal services organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to wellness and well-being in the legal profession through the Award for Excellence in Wellness and Well-Being in the Legal Profession. The award is presented annually at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting.

The 2024 award will be presented at the CLSBA Annual Meeting & Breakfast at 7:30 am, on May 31, 2024, in Virginia Beach.

Award Nomination Details

Eligibility

All Virginia lawyers, retired judges, law firms, corporate law departments, government law departments and agencies, law schools, bar associations, other legal services organizations are eligible if the nominated individual is a member of the Virginia State Bar or, for nominated organizations, if one or more members of the Virginia State Bar actively engaged in the work of the organization and substantially participated in the nominated program or service. Those individuals whose livelihood is derived from delivering wellness services to lawyers, law students, or other legal professionals are ineligible to receive the award.

Criteria

The organization or individual receiving the award must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated dedication to the development, promotion, and delivery of wellness services, programs, or education to legal professionals in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Sponsorship of activities, programs, or initiatives that creatively and effectively promote and improve wellness and well-being in the legal profession.

Instructions and Deadline: April 12, 2024

All entries shall have a cover page with the following information:

  • Name of the nominated organization or individual;
  • Name, address, and phone number of a contact person for the nominated organization or for the nominated individual; and
  • Name, address, and phone number of the person making the nomination (if different from the contact person).

In addition to the cover page, the nomination shall include an explanation as to why the legal organization or individual should be the recipient of The Award for Excellence in Wellness and Well-Being in the Legal Profession. Supplemental materials, such as news articles or press releases are welcome, but the nomination package should not exceed 10 pages.

Entries must be postmarked or received via e-mail no later than April 12, 2024.

Judging

Nominations will be judged according to:

  • A program or initiative’s focus on targeting any of the specific occupational risks of the practice of law discussed in the current Virginia State Bar President’s Special Committee on Lawyer Well-Being’s report, or an individual’s or organization’s demonstrated overall dedication to the development, promotion, and delivery of wellness services, programs, or education.
  • Details such as the amount of participation in a program or initiative, outcomes (if known) of such programs or initiatives, and feedback from participants.
  • Priority will be given to those efforts that occurred over a period of time, such as a series of workshops or educational programming dedicated to wellness and well-being in the profession or to programs that are creative, new, and effective.
  • Emphasis will be placed on programs and initiatives that took place during the 12-month period preceding the nomination.

The CLSBA will review and select the recipient of the award.
