Charles E. Powers Receives Family Law Service Award

Portrait of Charles Powers.Charles E. Powers, a shareholder in the Richmond firm of Stiles Ewing Powers PC, has been awarded the Family Law Service Award by the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section Board of Governors.

The Family Law Service Award is presented to an individual or organization “who has consistently given freely of time, talent and energies to provide valuable services in advancing family, domestic relations, or juvenile law in Virginia.”

In his nomination, Brian H. Jones of Barnes & Diehl said of Powers, “Although Chuck and I are competitors, he is, to my mind, overall the most skilled and informed lawyer currently practicing in family law in Virginia. … More than anything else, Chuck’s contribution to family law in Virginia is based upon his professional competence, humility, and grace as a human being.”

Powers graduated from Suffolk University in Massachusetts before receiving his law degree from William & Mary School of Law. After clerking in the Chesterfield Circuit Court, he has devoted his entire career to family law and is the former chair of the VSB’s Family Law Section Board of Governors, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

A prolific author, speaker, and teacher, Powers also has been appointed by local courts as a Commissioner in Chancery and Judge Pro Tempore. His practice spans all elements of family law from adoption to child custody agreements to pre-and post-nuptial agreements. In 2017, 2020, and 2023, he was named Richmond Lawyer of the Year in Family Law by Best Lawyers in America.

The Family Law Service Award will be presented at the 40th Annual Advanced Family Law Seminar on April 18 at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
